When you hear the word ‘unite,’ several images might come to mind. Perhaps you imagine gathering together for a common purpose. Perhaps you think of combining variety. Perhaps you picture a whole made up of many parts. All of this is true in what I believe the Holy Spirit is making of this worship service.
We believe God is calling us to unite to be stronger as the body of Christ. By gathering as one together weekly, we can live and learn more deeply and authentically with one another. We can celebrate our uniqueness and experience the beauty of how God creates something new out of us.
There is a new song that we will be singing as part of this service during our Young Disciples Time. The Holy Spirit put this song in my mind as I was cuddling my daughter to sleep one night. I thought to myself that the one thing I hope she experiences through the life of the church is compassion. Having deeper compassion for all of the children of God is something she can only learn as a diverse group of people come together in harmony. If she can experience in church all races, ages and sexes united in the purpose of loving God, she can get a glimpse of Jesus in our midst. She can go through life seeing Jesus in every person, having deeper compassion for them and making this world a more hope-filled place. The song that came to mind as I cuddled her was:
The Jesus in Me sees the Jesus in you.
The Jesus in Me loves the Jesus in you.
So easy… so easy…easy to love.
I pray as we sing this song, united in love this Sunday, Christ will reign on earth as it is in heaven.
After all, isn’t that what preparing for Christmas is all about?
