Ephesians 5:4-21 lays out some character options, both good and bad, worth considering in ourselves and those we hang out with, friend or otherwise. Some good character examples are, “be filled with the Spirit, sing songs of praise, give thanks to God in your heart, be humble toward one another.” These are pretty broad, so what do you think a person who loves to sing, is thankful, and humble looks like? How would you recognize such a person? Some bad character examples are “empty words, silly talk, greed, drunkenness.” Is it easier to imagine someone like this?
As you create your life’s diary moments, what would the perfect friendship look like? Now imagine that friendship becoming romantic? Does this seem satisfying or weird? I recently read that before making life altering decisions, you should ask yourself “Will this feed my soul?” The purpose is to keep us from acting and reacting on autopilot, and to think about our decisions in a more life giving way. Often we make relationship decisions based on those we've made in the past, even if they weren't successful. If something didn't work before, then we need to change our approach before attempting it again. If the answer is “Yes, this friendship will feed my soul,” then move forward. But if the answer is no, this friendship will not feed my soul, then we have to consciously choose to not allow that person to influence us.
Let me know what you think…..
