Where do you go to pray? Do you have a designated spot? What about time? How long do you invest in prayer? Just asking these questions makes me feel nervous. I immediately begin to feel as though I am somehow in deficit, that I need to and should be praying more. Whether or not I choose to invest the time and energy in praying like Jesus is up to me. God is not shaming me if I don’t.
But when I am honest with myself, I really do feel better when I pray. And a lot better the longer I pray. Sometimes amazing things happen during prayer, and sometimes not. But I always feel lighter, happier, easier and more positive about life and those around me.
Brian McLaren, author, speaker, and fly fisherman, says prayer is life-giving and we shouldn’t worry about getting answers or struggling with when, how, and what to pray. He says prayer is about staying in flow with God. I like that. Life is like a flowing stream and we can damn up the waters with all kinds of unnecessary worries. Prayer, in any form, can unclog the damn and get the life-giving water of God flowing again. So, start praying! My guess is, when it really comes down to it, you’ll feel better and find your prayer time increasing without even realizing it.
